Kalaw has become a favorite destination for hikers and trekkers due to its location in the country’s eastern mountain region, officially called the Shan Hills. Lowland Burma is renowned for having blistering summer temperatures that soar to beyond 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Kalaw is a perfect place to get away from the heat of the plains and the coast and do some exploring through the forests. While many areas of the country require foreigners to have a permit to hike, those regulations do not apply here. You’ll find excellent guesthouses, hotels as well as markets offering a variety of local specialties. But do take caution when you’re in the forests – the local wildlife includes several varieties of venomous snakes.
